When I was a kid in the 50s, the most exciting thing about the library was actually the bookmobile that drove the neighborhood, letting you check out books right in front of your house.
Today libraries, like it or not, have become the center of the community. Books are like the second or third reason to go there.
The Pitkin County Library in downtown core Aspen is a treasure. They often give out free books! But the real reason to show up is the wealth of programming.
Yesterday, for example, there was FREE live music and the most delicious soup offerings in a celebration of Library Month in the oft-used community room.
During the summer when the Aspen Music School and Festival is in town, there are FREE classical music concerts every Monday and Friday.
I love that they have a banned book meeting the last Tuesday of every month!
Want to play Dungeons and Dragons? Play at the library. Into crafting? Join the craft circle.
This being Aspen, there are even bike maintenance seminars. Trivia nights. There are even programs for toddlers.
I love the historic building the library inhabits. And the windows provide a breath-taking vista of the mountains.
The staff is knowledgeable and helpful.
Since the library is in downtown core, there is virtually no parking. Walk or take the bus.

Let's not forget that this library was used in the 90s movie Aspen Extreme! Growing up in Michigan, the movie inspired me to move to Vail, Co.

A great library with a solid selection of a books and resources. One of the things that stood out to me is their 3D printer. They even host classes on how to use the machine. You're also able to download several magazines to your phone with a partnering company, you just need to download the app and use your library card to sign in.
The library has 3 stories and plenty of working space. There is also a cafe and large community meeting room. They even have an outdoor patio on their second floor to read outside if the weather is nice. Staff is also helpful and willing to help you find your next book.

I participated in my first Books + Brews on Monday evening hosted by the library. I enjoyed the evening thoroughly. Genevieve organized a wonderful evening with good food and thought provoking discussion about the book. What an amazing offering the Pitkin County Library has for its community. Thank you!

The Pitkin County Library is an example of what a true library is about- community. To hear other perspectives on books and share those over a beer at Hops was so much fun. Thanks Genevieve for putting together such a great club!
