It could’ve gone better!

Let’s play a game! Imagine going horseback riding for the first time, only for your guides to take a trail for experienced riders. One of the riders by you’s horse starts slipping, runs into yours, and it’s rider flys off, and the guides don’t do anything about it! Where are you riding? If you said Little Book Cliffs, you win!

Very nice trails not far from Grand Junction. We tried to go as far as we could with our rental car but we ended up completing the ride with a hike! We followed the river bed for 4 miles. Our hope was to see the wild horses but all we got to see was their poop on the trails! Nonetheless the hike was very nice. On the path, we could see coal layer in the ground. That’s why they were operating a mine nearby. We also climbed a hill that was overseeing Fruita or Grand Junction… not sure which one it was. Make sure you bring water as it is extremely hot and dry.

Really good maps, signs, and trails. The horses are usually easy to find. The whole area has great scenery with its large cliffs and deep canyons. You can either hike a small distance or go along the river farther into the canyon. Definitely worth the visit to this place.

Not not NOT recommended. Sounds great, grandiose, and a worthy place to visit. After spending most of the day trying to find it, I have my reservations about that without a LOT of preparation.
Getting here is like navigating an adventure survival show. 🤣. Any directions to this ā€˜attraction’ other than the ONLY sign on I-70 at DeBeque are confusing, contradictory, and obfuscated to the point that it must be deliberate. From that point you are routed through a charming little town, and then out into the wild beyond with no further signage. Worse, you lose cell coverage just outside of town…after 10 miles we backtracked to the highway, and asked again for directions. This time we were directed 25+miles further down the highway to exit 46…which does not exist. Exit 45 does, at Cameo firing range. Nothing will get your attention like traveling down a small dirt road with warning signs on either side of you that you are in an active firing range - and the shots ringing out beside you for emphasis. 😳
Two miles down that road and we hit a drop into a dead wash almost two feet deep. Since we were NOT in a lifted four wheel drive (didn’t see that anywhere in the description on the lovely website) we turned around again. 🤬 Three hours later, third time trying we stopped and asked a local how to get there. They do have a lovely brochure they can hand out, with idyllic pics of majestic valleys and happy horses. They also say ā€œgood luckā€.😳🤣
When the people who LIVE there tell you they ā€œwouldn’t recommend itā€
ā€œthere are almost no signsā€,
ā€œthey don’t know anyone who has actually been up thereā€ and
ā€œmost people get lost and give up…?ā€
Really bad management? Another patron at the gas station said they just saw on the news that BLM was rounding up 450 horses this week, to send for sale. Maybe there’s nothin to see. Either way, that’s a tank of gas and 5 hours of my life I won’t get back. Don’t make our mistake.
This is not your average day trip with the family. 🤣

I didn't see the horses, but it was a fun little off-road experience. Be mindful of the weather. If it rains it's muddy, and could possibly become trapped if there is a flash flood.
