The new Hayward Public Library, officially known as the 21st Century Library, is just amazing. It's incredible modern, stunning, and sotisficate; which adds up to the city of Hayward, a renovated air of modernity and innovation.
Additionally, it has several formation and professional programs that help the community in general.
The library, designed by Noll & Tam Architects, is located in a corner, diagonal to 'the Hayward City Hall. It looks like small; but you need to know that is huge inside. It has quickly become a vital hub and a reference point or the community. We need more libraries like that.

Nice place. Good design, a large selection of books. The only thing I didn't like was that there were few places where you could sit down and read. You can also take English language courses there. I really like libraries. It's always quiet here. I love this atmosphere. You can come with children, because there is a lot of interesting things here for them too.

It's a wonderful place, I'm so glad that I can visit it with a child. Always clean toilets and a great area for children and activities, we appreciate it. It's a pity that homeless people can't be kicked out

I regularly visit the library and work from there.

Good - The building is very impressive and they have done a good job with the furniture, the aesthetic and lighting. You can really focus here. The collection of books is really big and it is very convenient to check them out / return using the machines. They have 3D printing and laser cutting equipment as well, which are available for free. The staff is very friendly and professional as well.

Bad - Several homeless people can be often seen, simply passed out, on the furniture. Often times they are snoring loudly and stinking real bad. They generally carry 5-6 shopping bags/suitcases with them. I remember one time, all 3 floor bathroom stalls were occupied by the homeless people, possibly doing drugs inside the stalls. On one floor a stall was occupied for more than half hour, while a shirtless guy was wiping his armpits using wet paper tissues at the sink. When an elderly gentleman requested the guy in the stall to come out, he became aggressive and threatened to assault him.

I don't feel safe visiting the library anymore. I can't imagine bringing my kid here anytime. The city should do something about this. I have been told that many of these people come from SF via BART. Maybe check the address on their ID? Maybe only allow people with an ID to enter? I'm sure the library staff doesn't feel safe either.

I don't use the bathroom at the library anymore. I hope the situation improves soon. I am a Hayward resident and I pay for the city's infrastructure via taxes. I should be able to use the infrastructure without feeling threatened.

One of the few libraries that will let you apply for a library card remotely and they'll send you your card in the mail (for california residents)! I live in Stockton, but use the Hayward library card to get access to Libby (i.e Overdrive) all the time! I use it more than my Stockton-San Joaquin card just because there are more ebook options in the Northern California overdrive.
